About our discovery tools

Match

100% of our movie matches are handpicked by our human writers, who are mostly former video-store clerks. None of the matches have been picked by algorithms, collaborative filtering, or ‘wisdom’ of the crowds. We get all of our data from former video clerks because they’ve worked with tens of thousands of customers and know how to filter the data. In other words, they know why customers like which movies and why. We typically choose about 20 matches per movie, but it varies from five to 50.

SuperMatch

The Clerks’ newest and most intuitive application combines both our handpicked movie-matching and our attribute-based rating systems. It expands the number of potential matches to the original movie from an average of 20 to about 300. In addition, the SuperMatch attribute adjusters allow users to navigate and prioritize their expanded list by adjusting one or more of five +/- buttons to match their taste.

Mash it

Here you can drive through Clerkdogs' rich database by adjusting and even changing the attribute sliders to suit your tastes. Users can enliven the five sliders by choosing any movie as a starting point. The Mash it sliders will be preset to reflect the ratings of your starting movie. The first results list will show movies that match those attributes while not necessarily matching the starting movie itself (that’s our “Match” feature). Then the customer can adjust, eliminate, and/or replace attribute sliders to easily browse the Clerks’ database. On the backend of Mash it, our Clerks have carefully chosen, prioritized, and then rated on a 1 to 10 scale the key attributes of each movie. We prioritize the attributes relative to their importance in the movie, so changing their order will alter your results.

Build Your Own Movie

Just choose and prioritize up to five Clerkdogs attribute sliders from our menu of 36 attributes, and then adjust to your taste. Whenever you move a slider, even your first, results will appear, including a Clerk’s Pick. On the back-end of this unique Clerkdogs system, we have created a massive database that is both fun and intuitive for you to drive. Our writers have carefully chosen, prioritized, and then rated for quantity on a 1 to 10 scale each of a movie’s top five attributes. We use additional tagged information about that movie and also some algorithms to power our Build Your Own Movie system on the back end.
