Shaun of the Dead (2004)
- Synopsis:
- Edgar Wright's horror-comedy film, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, follows the title character (Simon Pegg) through his mundane life in London. Joined by his immature and ever-present roommate, Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun excels at nothing except drinking pints of ale and watching television, which causes friction with his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield). Before Shaun can save his relationship, however, he's got to fend off a horde of zombies that are slowly taking over the city. Armed with a cricket bat and a vague sense of direction, Shaun must rescue his friends and loved ones, and bring them to the only safe place he can think of--the pub.Cowritten by Wright and Pegg, SHAUN OF THE DEAD succeeds remarkably well at combining droll British humor with good, old-fashioned zombie cinema. While the movie is often hilariously amusing, it takes its horror pedigree seriously, offering up moments of genuine suspense, and even a healthy dose of gore. Pegg is oddly charming as the put-upon lead slacker, and Frost is appropriately oafish, but the living dead themselves also take up a fair amount of screen time, shuffling and limping in their best Romero form. For lovers of zombie films and other chills-and-chuckles outings like EVIL DEAD II and DEAD ALIVE, SHAUN OF THE DEAD is an instant cult classic.

Undead is a Creative match for Shaun of the Dead
- Synopsis:
- Australian brothers Michael and Peter Spierig directed this entry in the flesh-eating zombie genre, a full-on gore and gag fest, outback style. The plot finds local beauty contest winner Rene (Felicity Mason), about to head out of her isolated lakeside hometown to the big city when a meteor shower animates some corpses, with the usual grisly results. She and some other survivors hole up in an old farmhouse owned by the taciturn antihero, Marion (Mungo McKay), who likes performing slow motion back flips while blasting the heads of zombies with his endless supply of .45 automatics. When everyone tires of shouting at each other they try and escape the endless zombie onslaught in Marion's van, only to run into a giant, spike-covered wall blocking the road out of town. If that's not enough, there's the problem of acid rain (resulting in the need for the foxy Rene to remove her over garments) and random alien abductions of insects, livestock, and supporting actors.Shot on digital video with an array of surprisingly convincing (for its obvious low budget) special effects, the film plants its forked tongue firmly in cheek as it references other Aussie gross-out hits like Peter Jackson's BAD TASTE and DEAD ALIVE, as well as midnight favorites like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Highlights include a fight scene involving some undead fish, and a hair-raising twist ending. While it's more satiric and self-mocking than genuinely scary, there are still some major shocks and youngsters might blanche at the plethora of gore and severed body parts.

Dead Meat is a Creative match for Shaun of the Dead
- Synopsis:
- Writer-director Conor McMahon attempts a one-man Irish horror movie revival with his genuinely frightening and purposely hilarious low-budget zombie film DEAD MEAT. While driving through the rural Irish countryside, Spanish tourists Helena (Marian Araujo) and Martin (David Ryan) literally stumble upon a legion of flesh-eating zombies created by a mutated strain of mad-cow disease. It isn't long before Martin himself succumbs to zombification, leaving Helena to partner with local gravedigger Desmond (David Mallard) to fight off the army of undead with creatively zany techniques involving everything from shovels to vacuum cleaners. Balancing dark humor with moody atmospherics and ample doses of gore, DEAD MEAT deftly straddles the line between the self-conscious parody of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and the serious horror traditions of George Romero and Sam Raimi for a good old-fashioned zombie flick destined to become an instant cult classic.

- Synopsis:
- Kevin Smith directed the pilot episode of this wildly imaginative slacker comedy-cum-fantasy series. Bret Harrison stars as Sam Oliver, a twentysomething who dropped out of college because it "made him sleepy" and now spends his days working in a Home Depot-like warehouse store, chilling with his best bud Bert "Sock" Wysocki and harboring a big-time crush on his beautiful co-worker Andi. But when Satan (Ray Wise) comes around claiming ownership of Sam, Sam's parents have some explaining to do. It seems that, in a desperate attempt to cure himself of a nasty illness he suffered from years ago, dad made a pact with the Devil to relinquish his firstborn, planning to dupe the horned one by never fathering a child. Satan had the last laugh, though, when he promised to absolve Sam's father's doctor of his gambling debts if the quack assured the Olivers that they weren't capable of having a baby. Now Sam is a Reaper, a bounty hunter of sorts tasked with retrieving souls that have escaped from eternal damnation and capturing them in vessels forged in the depths Hell to resemble ordinary objects such as vacuum cleaners and Zippo lighters. Sam discovers he has two great friends when Sock, who's braver than he looks, and Andi, who just might like Sam back, happily assist their overwhelmed buddy with his new Reaper duties. With smarts, energy, and vivid originality, REAPER is a supernatural comedy to behold. Included here are all 18 episodes of season one.

House of Wax is a Borderline match for Shaun of the Dead
- Synopsis:
- In this remake of the classic 1953 Andre de Toth film that starred Vincent Price, horrors abound in a creepy wax museum. A group of road-tripping Florida teenagers (Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Paris Hilton, Robert Ri'chard, Jared Padalecki, and Jon Abrahams) stop to camp near a small town where an abandoned wax museum draws their curiosity. Upon exploring the scary cobwebbed space, they find that the figures are not only eerily lifelike, but that the entire museum--floor to ceiling--is actually made of wax. If that wasn't enough to scare them, they encounter a couple of very unsettling characters who seem to be the only people around for miles. One is a blood-splattered redneck who collects roadkill, dumping the bodies of dead deer into a fetid carcass swamp. The other is Bo (Brian Van Holt), a gas station attendant who lures the kids back to his house. Soon, through a series of stomach-turning slasher scenes featuring scissors, long knives, and even a pair of pliers, the teens get to know Bo a whole lot better. They even meet his insane brother Vincent (also played by Van Holt). Brief interludes of teen squabbling and a Hilton strip tease in red lace lingerie temporarily break the tension, but for the most part this HOUSE OF WAX stays the course with shockingly gory moments that earn grosser-than-gross status. Sick predilections involving an experimental surgical station and an elaborate wax-coating machine reveal Vincent's artistic process. But before the bloodbath is over, more twisted secrets about Bo and Vincent bubble to the surface, resulting in a spectacular grand finale and total meltdown.
